Why Should I do HIIT?

By Chris Walker-Hebborn

Firstly, what is HIIT?

High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) involves short, intense workouts. You give a series of exercises your full effort for short bursts, and follow it with a period of rest. Although exercising with this type of maximum effort is difficult, it does wonders for your health & wellbeing.

Why is HIIT So Beneficial?

HIIT works on the principle of adaption, where the body adapts to the strain it is put under to improve its ability to cope. By pushing the body into the anaerobic zone, where the heart is performing to 80-90% of its maximum rate, the heart, lungs and muscles will learn to adapt to the challenge.

Not only will a person find that the exercises become easier, their body will also be able to maintain speed and exertion during other forms of rigorous exercise.

Most people aren't used to pushing into the anaerobic threshold, but HIIT training asks you to enter this anaerobic zone often as there’s limited time for rest. The short bursts or sprints of work require your muscles to burn glucose anaerobically as there isn't enough time for oxygen to help produce additional ATP (adenosine triphosphate), which is your body's main energy source.

Ultimately HIIT training provides a multitude of health benefits. It improves your stamina, increases your strength, assists with fat loss, keeps your heart healthy and your body younger, and it relieves stress!

Why should I do HIIT at FLY?

FLY's bespoke HIIT class is called FIRE and runs 7 days a week in our purpose built HIIT studio, known as "The Dungeon".

As the Head Trainer at FLY & a former Olympic athlete, I truly believe FIRE offers something unique for everyone.

I have often found it difficult to replicate pushing my body to its maximum since retiring from sport but every time I step foot in the dungeon at FLY I leave the session with the same satisfaction I used to have as an athlete.

So whether you are just starting out on your fitness journey or if you are looking for that little bit extra in your sessions, myself and the other trainers at FLY will always find a way to unlock your potential and ensure you get the most out of your HIIT session.
